The G-13 marijuana type is fine folklore worthy of The M-Files examination. G-13 is a strain of cannabis that is purportedly taken from University of Mississippi Top Secret cannabis lab. Back in the day, U.S. federal government scientists had been genetically honing G-13 to be the most potent pot plant ever.

Possibly G-13 was created as some sort of truth serum for FBI or CIA spooks. Who wrongly believed strong cannabis extracts would make homegrown commies, foreign spies and other evil despots breakdown and confess their diabolical ways. Government research revealed G-13 only made people giggle under bright interrogation lights.

Recognizing G-13 value amongst his pothead friends, a reefer-loving researcher cloned the super potent sativa strain. Then snuck these clones out University of Mississippi lab before distributing cuttings to friends. There is some probability to this story. A few clones placed in test tubes are easily tossed into our insider’s lunchbox and taken home.

Where he grows the plant out in his backyard. Providing samples and cuttings to friends to grow in their yard. Possibly our horticulturalist brings a few inside during the winter months.

But why didn’t the scientist ever acquire seeds.

Accepting the clone theory forces us to realize that any future G-13 marijuana strains would be crossed with another strain for seeds. Regardless of backcrossing G-13 would never be in its pure form as grown in University of Mississippi lab.

Had this unknown scientist, who to this day remains nameless, a secret better kept than Deep Throat, taken stable G-13 seeds and cuttings we’d be closer to believing G-13 kicking around today is legitimately from University of Mississippi lab. However, the marijuana myth goes that our stoner scientist stole only cuttings, not seeds.

G-13 is a great stoner story worthy of a Wikipedia entry. Thus it’s not surprising when G-13 begins to pop up on the stoner scene in seed form. Obviously a new improved G-13. A newly developed cannabis strain was coined G-13 in honor of the marijuana myth. Given a great legend too hype its potential.

Who doesn’t love a fab cannabis tale?

In numerous Yongesterdam bring your own bud shops I’ve come across plenty of potheads sampling G-13 in the Volcano Vaporizers. A local Church of the Universe produces their own brand of G-13 seeds and sacrament. It’s a fantastic uplifting spiritual sativa high.

But plenty of potheads report G-13 isn’t a sativa, but a highly resinous indica. A lively debate will break out amongst your posse during a session when the topic of whether G-13 is an indica or sativa is discussed between bong rips. Given its fantastic legend G-13 is probably both a fucking incredible indica and sativa, depending on where the strain was procured. The one common feature found amongst all reports and samples is the copious amount of resin G-13 produces.

I Want To Believe, G-13 is a liberated marijuana strain from University of Mississippi. A pure G-13 government grade stash exists somewhere still vacuumed sealed. Plausible considering we recently discovered a 2700 year-old shaman’s stash. Which also contained cannabis seeds. Scientist failed to germinate them.

The bulk of the bong filler known marketed today as G-13 is just that a cleverly coy cannabis moniker. But we love G-13 for its stoner lore. One day a trench coated toking man will meet me in an underground car park armed with G-13 seeds and samples. The M-File on G-13 will remain open, allowing me to continue to sample various offerings.

How can a cannabis enthusiast enjoy the rich exotic flavor of their recently scored stone if their bong has been blackened by many sessions and the water hasn’t been changed in a month? They can’t! These adulterants interfere with weed taste and high.

A dirty bong is like eating gourmet food off dirty dishes.

After the effort and expense gone through to score good stone you owe yourself a clean bong. In these dire economic times a clean bong is a simple stoner joy. A sparkling bong is something to come home to after a hard day at work.

Plenty of professional potheads clean their bong following every session. Breaking out a bottle of 99% ISO Alcohol and a carton of Epsom salt. They swirl a mix of ISO, Epsom salt and water around in their bong, sometimes several times, until the bong is purchase clean again. The salts work as a scrubbing agent and the ISO as a solvent.

Their bongs never get to the point of ever needing anything more intense than a swirl.

But even this method of cleaning is tiresome.

Not everyone has obsessive compulsive friends who will gladly clean their whole bong collection after a sativa session. Though its worth having someone in your crew who has this affliction as your bongs will never be cleaner.

Plenty of professional potheads desire this level of cleanliness, but don’t want too put in the effort. Not too mention constantly having a stock of Epsom salt and ISO alcohol kicking around.

My friend Marijuana Mage has come up with a darn good solution!

Lemon juice in the bong water. That’s it! Lemon juice. But not too much lemon juice. Or this will ruin the taste of the toke. Add about ten drops of lemon juice to the water of your newly cleaned bong.

This only works if the bong has been cleaned already.

Marijuana Mage has been perfecting the idea for a month now. We’ve done several sessions together and I’m amazed at the results.

We held a heavy session yesterday. Inhaling Skunk #1, Grape Fruit and Nebula. Before we began Mage dumped ten drops into the freshly loaded bong to demonstrate the power of lemon juice. After a good session trying all three marijuana strains, including replacing the bong water, Mage was able to pack his bong up almost as clean as when it arrived.

It’d become a little honey colored. With very little THC residue.

That ganja gunk does contain THC. Though we won’t smoke it, police, prosecutors and judges will punish the pothead caught with bong resin. Serious! Happened to a friend of mine. Upon arrest police will confiscate a bong, lay a charge of possession of paraphernalia by testing the gunk for THC.

A nice clean bong will foil these police paraphernalia plans!

Stash for the afterlife: A photograph of a stash of cannabis found in the 2,700-year-old grave of a man in the Gobi Desert. Scientists are unsure if the marijuana was grown for more spiritual or medical purposes, but it’s evident that the man was buried with a lot of it.

Nearly two pounds of still-green plant material found in a 2,700-year-old grave in the Gobi Desert has just been identified as the world’s oldest marijuana stash, according to a paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany.

A barrage of tests proves the marijuana possessed potent psychoactive properties and casts doubt on the theory that the ancients only grew the plant for hemp in order to make clothing, rope and other objects.

They apparently were getting high too.

Lead author Ethan Russo told Discovery News that the marijuana “is quite similar” to what’s grown today.

“We know from both the chemical analysis and genetics that it could produce THC (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid synthase, the main psychoactive chemical in the plant),” he explained, adding that no one could feel its effects today, due to decomposition over the millennia.

Russo served as a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Botany while conducting the study. He and his international team analyzed the cannabis, which was excavated at the Yanghai Tombs near Turpan, China. It was found lightly pounded in a wooden bowl in a leather basket near the head of a blue-eyed Caucasian man who died when he was about 45.

“This individual was buried with an unusual number of high value, rare items,” Russo said, mentioning that the objects included a make-up bag, bridles, pots, archery equipment and a kongou harp. The researchers believe the individual was a shaman from the Gushi people, who spoke a now-extinct language called Tocharian that was similar to Celtic.

Scientists originally thought the plant material in the grave was coriander, but microscopic botanical analysis of the bowl contents, along with genetic testing, revealed that it was cannabis.

The size of seeds mixed in with the leaves, along with their color and other characteristics, indicate the marijuana came from a cultivated strain. Before the burial, someone had carefully picked out all of the male plant parts, which are less psychoactive, so Russo and his team believe there is little doubt as to why the cannabis was grown.

What is in question, however, is how the marijuana was administered, since no pipes or other objects associated with smoking were found in the grave.

“Perhaps it was ingested orally,” Russo said. “It might also have been fumigated, as the Scythian tribes to the north did subsequently.”

Although other cultures in the area used hemp to make various goods as early as 7,000 years ago, additional tomb finds indicate the Gushi fabricated their clothing from wool and made their rope out of reed fibers. The scientists are unsure if the marijuana was grown for more spiritual or medical purposes, but it’s evident that the blue-eyed man was buried with a lot of it.

“As with other grave goods, it was traditional to place items needed for the afterlife in the tomb with the departed,” Russo said.

The ancient marijuana stash is now housed at Turpan Museum in China. In the future, Russo hopes to conduct further research at the Yanghai site, which has 2,000 other tombs.

“Legalize marijuana and take all that money and invest it in teachers and in education,”Santana said in an interview this week. “You will see a transformation in America.”

During his online town hall on March 26, Obama fielded a question about whether legalization of the illicit drug would help pull the nation out of recession. Obama said he didn’t think it was good economic policy, and also joked: “I don’t know what this says about the online audience.”

But Santana said making pot legal is “really way overdue, like the prohibition with the alcohol and stuff like that.

“I really believe that as soon as we legalize and decriminalize marijuana we can actually afford a really good governor who won’t keep taking money away from education and from teachers and send him back to Hollywood where he can do ‘D’ movies and we can get an ‘A’ governor,” referring to former movie action hero and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Santana made the comments as he was promoting his upcoming rock residency in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The show debuts May 27 and runs through 2010.

“It’s a milestone for me because I always said I would never do certain things,” Santana said, adding that the list included staying in one place for too long.

“Yet what is very different is this is the year I decided to do all the things that I said I would never do. It’s a way of coming into a room that I thought was dark and I would be afraid and I actually bring my light to it.”

Santana, whose hits vary from “Evil Ways” to “Maria Maria,” said he is also working on two upcoming albums.

While the 61-year-old has previously talked about a possible retirement, he’s decided to be more careful about predicting the future.

“Every time I tell God my plans he cracks up, he starts laughing. So I just decided to be quiet for a while and not say that I am going to retire and go to Maui and become a minister,” he said. “God was cracking up. He thought it was a good joke. So I said, ‘OK.’ Every time I want to make him laugh I tell him my plans. So we’ll see.”
